We've been covering gps systems a lot lately, both in the car and on the wrist. In the case of the in-the-car ones, we've covered both palm and pocket pc. But what about the all-in-one gps devices that go in your car? Tomtom, maker of the gps systems we've profiled in the past that work with either palm (see ) or pocket pc (see ), has announced a new all-in-one-unit version, complete with screen, gps, and a power cord. Recently i had the pleasure of being treated to a preview of the device, called the tomtomgo, and have detailed my experience, including pictures, below. Front view of the tomtom go; notice the 3d map and color display as you can see from the picture above, the tomtom go features graphical 3d map instructions. In addition, it sports the following features on screen: • poi; millions of points of interest, including gas stations, hotels, restaurants, parking garages, and more • arrow and distance indicator • text-based instructions • street names • nearest highway • estimated time of arrival and total distance • favorites (navigate to your favorite addresses) as for hardware, the device itself contains an sd memory card slot, 200mhz arm920t processor, 3.5″ 320×240 color tft lcd screen, 32 mb of ram, and an internal li-ion battery capable of powering the device for 5 hours.

It also sports a built-in gps receiver with 12-channel “all-in-view” tracking. As for the operating system, while the software looks the same as it does on both the palm and pocket pc, this little beauty is powered by linux. Mixmeister fusion mac crack.
So, how does it work? Unfortunately, the demo i saw only had atlanta installed, so i couldn't take it for a test drive. However, playing around with it was just like using the tomtom software i'm used to, complete with touch-screen navigation, on the fly re-mapping to your destination, and more. It's surprising that most gps systems installed in a car today don't feature a touch-screen.
The tomtom go also sports a geeky new feature known as assisted satellite navigation. Asn provides virtually uninterrupted navigation in tunnels and urban canyons. According to the tomtom folks i met with, it's almost like a ball that moves forward. As it moves forward, it adjusts your position on the tomtom go to compensate for the movement. The folks at tomtom have also designed the unit to fit into your vehicle and to be installed permanently after-market if desired. The unit ships with a car mounting kit, but also offers an optional professional docking kit, complete with a direct connection to the vehicle's power, an optional external gps antenna, and an audio system.

Because i haven't seen a company that provides gps maps for other countries in america other that the us and canada – by jordan23 that is the problem. (2:21pm est tue apr 27 2004) i cant even get a tom tom map for my 3650 for my state.
They are mostly a euro thing. – by evan brom sweet! (4:35pm est tue apr 27 2004) sweet device!! I guess that the maps are damn expensive, as they are for tom tom 3. – by matt $900 is way toooooooo much (8:45am est wed apr 28 2004) pocketpc.com etc cheaper to buy 2 pdas for $900 – palm and windows. Garmin has a similar device for ~$500 and it is a pda too! Hp's 2215 (dual slot) at ~400 + 300 for gps system(hw+sw) makes it a better buy.
Software freel available on shareza etc the dumb ass reviewer chief geek did not check the device out properly – is the routing fast and accurate, can get you back after you missed a turn on the is, can cope with display updates at 75 mph on the is, are the poi's relevent or just cemetries, banks, and other garbage, is greenery ponds parks correctly depicted, are one ways correctly marked, are addresses on the correct side of the road, are the display details adjustable etc etc. For $900, it should be a top of the line unit otherwise the garmin iq3600 at ~half the price is way better.
